Does Comments About Clothes Disturb You?

Some people really get disturbed if someone else make a bad comment about how they are dressed up. "Look at his clothes. He looks like a joker" is a powerful enough comment to make some people loose their metal balance and drive them mad.

Friends, it's a weakness. Yes, you should dress yourself properly. But to get annoyed and angry so easily by few words uttered by a passerby is just not right. Imagine if everyone knows about this weakness of yours, how easily they can disturb you and take advantage of you in different ways. This is because when you get angry you loose control on yourself. You start behaving idiotically and make mistakes for which you pay in future heavily.

Swami Vivekananda, an inspiring personality and monk from India, once went to Chicago (USA) to participate in the world religious conference.  There were few days still to go for religious conference to commence. Vivekananda was roaming about on the streets of Chicago, noticing the culture and other things about the country. He wasn't such a well known personality that time. In fact it will be right to say that not many people, if any, were looking forward to hear him.

Vivekananda soon became a subject of locals because of his 'dress, which was 'bizarre' as per locals. His One day while wandering on the streets in typical Indian monk clothes - a turban, a piece of cloth over the shoulder, and a cudgel in his hand. A lady, who was walking behind him with her friend, made a comment about his dressing -"Look at this gentlemen. How bizarre is he looking in this outfit. "

Swami Vivekananda heard it. He understood that American people are making a joke of India's costumes. He was worried that people may not take him seriously in conference and so he needs to make some things really clear to locals.

Vivekananda went to the lady and said to her (with a smile on his face) - "Dear, don't get amazed by my dress. They might look weird. But that's about it. In your country, seems to me that,  people are judged by their costumes. In my country people are judged by their character. Costumes and clothing are just a upper splash. Character is the real fulcrum of men's personality."

After hearing Vivekananda, the head of lady bowed down in shame. Later, when the world religious parliament started, after hearing the amazing speech of Swami Vivekananda, the Americans hearts got filled with feelings of deep reverence about him and India.

We can also learn from this instance of Swami Vivekananda. Instead of getting annoyed when someone make bad comments about your clothes, try and evaluate yourself on the basis of your character. World will also evaluate you, in long term, by your character.
